"Does the image of fathers get a bad rap in the media?"

Wednesday, Mar. 21, 20076 to 7 pm, AM 1670
Hosted by Eddie D.O.G.
Guest: Glenn Sacks, Sacks Media Group

In his recent column in Adweek (3/12/07) called Father Knows Best, Glenn Sacks challenges the advertising industry to stop depicting men and fathers as idiots and clowns, and to instead promote positive images of fathers and their interactions with their children. The column also discusses their current protest campaign against a major advertising agency's negative depiction of men.

In this week's show, we talk to Glenn Sacks and he tackles some key questions: Should people have equal rights? Does the media affect the way we think? Do fathers need a more positive portrayal in the media? Is stereotyping others a big deal? Has there been a shift in the way society treats each gender?

Eddie D.O.G. and the crew will lead the lively chat on this great topic that affects many in our society, including our youth. Tune in Wednesday night at 6:00 pm. Call in with your comments and join the fun. Or you can post your comments below and get it read on the air by Eddie D.O.G.

You guys got a point there. I'm a young and new father. My son was born 4 months ago. I would hate to see him grow up thinking fathers are like Al Bundy because that is how we are all protrayed on TV.

I never even noticed it until you mentioned it. The media and TV shows really seem to make all dads seem like doofooses. My dad is not like that. My dad was like Bill Cosby on the Cosby Show. Really Cool. But kinda strict. That's the way it should be.

"If we can turn on the TV and see women routinely being portrayed as lousy, irresponsible mothers, will that be funny? Will we still be laughing when commercials tell us that women aren't as smart as men? Or aren't as mature? Will it still be funny when women are always wrong and their husbands must continually correct them?" -Glenn Sacks

I think Glenn Sacks' article is very important and should be read by many people because like Kevin said he never noticed it. Those who do notice might think that it is simply a joke. When in reality people do get hurt through these advertisements.

unfortunately fathers in today's media have been portrayed very poorly!!
you no longer see the image of a father in a positive way - yeah al bundy a perfect example along w/the simpsons, family guy and many other shows are teens are watching and love -and therefore see this negative image.
there are not many positve images of fathers in the media as there use to be...for examlple; bill cosby, full house(danny, jesse & joey).

this media & society of ours has done a great job of distorting the image of both father (and mother).

even with our Hevenly Father has the image been distorted:
    in John 8:41-44...
I have been misrepresented by those who don't know me.

I am not distant and angry, but am the complete expression of love. 1 John 4:16

i believe the image/relationship we have with our earthly influences our image/relationship with that of our heavenly father.

Unfortunately, sometimes things don't work out between couples. I really believe that when a child has parents that are not together, our society tends to treat the father as if he was somehow less of a parent! A lot of people tend to think that if necessary to choose between the father & mother, that the child should always stay with the mother! I don't think that's fair!!!

    Imagine The Holy Family...
St. Joseph was there for his Son when Mary was tired or otherwise occupied. He showed Jesus, in His humanity how to build with his hands and taught him by example how to be a man. Simple wisdom. Simple love. A father's love.
    It not complicated

Usually, the only men who are treated well in commercials or television are those who are wealthy or "super handsome." I wanna know what about the "Common man!"

God created us in his image...- and woman from the the SIDE of man (his rib) so side by side - created equal - you would think that both would be treated equal - and i agree - it's not always in the best interest that a child remains in it's mothers care - i know a few guys who are with children and their child is the world to them...
there are men out there who strive to be the best father they know how!! May God continue to bless them!
and many blessings 2 generation connexion!
    you guys ROCK!!
